What is a viral TikTok video? (the viral ratio)

TikTok virality isn't a number of views but a gap from your normal: the viral ratio, a calculator, the signals the algorithm pushes, the ingredients of videos that take off and what to do in the first 48 h.

"My video got 40,000 views, is that viral?" Depends who's asking. For an account that usually gets 500 views, yes, clearly. For an account averaging 200,000 views, it's a flop. Virality isn't a number of views, it's a gap from your normal. Here's how to measure it, what the algorithm looks at to push a video, and what to do when it happens.

What a viral video is, concretely

A video is viral when it breaks out of your usual audience and spreads to people who don't know you — because they watch it to the end, share it, comment on it, and the algorithm pushes it to wider and wider circles. The most reliable sign in your analytics: the "For You" share in your traffic sources explodes and views keep climbing past 48 hours.

Calculate a video's viral ratio

Your median = the views of your "middle" video when you rank your last 10 by views.

What the algorithm looks at to push (by weight)

  1. Watch time — % watched in full and rewatches. It's signal #1, by far.
  2. Shares — a video sent in DMs or a story leaves your circle by definition.
  3. Comments — especially when they chain (replies, debates).
  4. Likes and saves — useful, but weaker than the first three.
  5. Follows from the video — a sign the content converts, the algorithm likes that.

So a video can go viral with "few" likes if it's watched on loop and sent around. Conversely, a video with a high like rate but low retention plateaus fast.

The ingredients we find in videos that take off

IngredientWhat it triggersExample format
A strong hook3-second retentionQuestion that hits home, result shown first
A loopRewatchesThe ending points back to the start, or the video ends without a transition
A "this is so me"DM sharesRecognizable situation from a precise niche
A strong opinion or a mistakeComments"You're wrong about X", team A / team B debate
Immediate valueSaves + sharesTip you can apply right away, before/after

You don't control virality. You control whether these ingredients are there. The rest is the number of attempts.

Your average viral ratio?

The analysis calculates the virality of your last 30 videos (gaps from your median, spikes): it's a 3-point criterion of your score. Free, 30 seconds.

When it happens: the 48 hours that count

  • Reply to comments, right away and for a long time. Every reply relaunches the video and keeps newcomers around.
  • Pin a comment that asks a question or starts a debate.
  • Post a part 2 within 24-48 h. New visitors to your profile are looking for what's next; that's when you convert them into followers.
  • Update your profile (bio, pinned videos) before the wave hits: that's where follows are decided.
  • Don't change topic the following week. People came for that; give them that.

And the "one viral video, then nothing" thing?

Classic. The video worked because it had an ingredient your others don't. Find which one (look at your retention curve, your sources), and do it again. A viral video is a clue, not an accident.

Key takeaways

  • Viral = a gap from your normal (viral ratio × 10), not an absolute number of views.
  • The algorithm pushes watch time first, then shares and comments.
  • When it takes off: reply, pin, part 2 within 48 h, profile up to date, same topic.
