How to read your TikTok analytics (the 3 numbers that really matter)

Where to find TikTok analytics, the 3 indicators to watch (retention, traffic sources, follower activity) and what decision to make based on what you see.

Everyone opens their TikTok analytics, almost nobody knows what to do with them. There are about twenty numbers, three really matter. Here's which ones, where to find them, and above all what decision to make based on what you see.

Turn on analytics (30 seconds)

Profile → ≡ (top right) → Creator tools → Analytics. If you don't see "Creator tools", switch to a Creator account: Settings → Account → Switch to Business account. It's free and changes nothing about your reach. Analytics are kept for 60 days, so write down your numbers once a month if you want to see the trend over the year.

The 3 numbers that matter

1. Retention (watch-time curve)

Open a video → Analytics → Overview tab, all the way down: the curve that goes down. It tells you when people leave. Two readings:

  • Drop before 3 seconds: your hook isn't working. It's the most common case, and the most profitable to fix.
  • Drop in the middle: you have a dead middle (explanation too long, a shot that drags). Cut.

The number that goes with it is the % watched in full. Above 50% on a 15-second video, you're good. On a 60-second video, 25-30% is already solid.

2. Traffic sources

Same screen, "Traffic sources". What you want to see: "For You" as the clear majority (60% and up). It means the algorithm is pushing your video to people who don't know you. If "Following" or "Personal profile" dominates, the video didn't pass its first test: it's going around in circles.

3. Follower activity

Followers tab → "Follower activity": the hours and days your audience is online. That's your answer to "when should I post". Post 30 to 60 minutes before the peak. (We go into detail in the article on the best time to post.)

Too many numbers? We read them for you.

The analysis sums up your last 30 videos in a score out of 20 and 7 criteria, with the one thing to fix first. Free.

The 5-minute weekly routine

  1. Write down views, % watched in full and "For You" share for this week's videos.
  2. Spot the best and the worst. What's different in the first 3 seconds?
  3. Pick one thing to test next week. Not three.

The rest of the numbers (profile views, reach, audience by country…) are interesting once a month, no more.

Key takeaways

  • Three numbers: retention (curve), traffic sources ("For You" share), follower activity.
  • Views are a result; retention explains the result.
  • One decision a week, one variable tested at a time.
